The Health Benefits of Thoughtful Lighting Control
The Sunset Protocol
Warm light tuned to your body's natural rhythm
The Sunset Protocol
The way your home is lit shapes your sleep, energy, and long‐term wellbeing and a properly programmed Lutron Smart Lighting Control system puts that within your reach.
For most of human history, our bodies followed a simple lighting schedule: bright, blue-rich light during the day, and soft, warm amber light in the evening.
Modern homes have broken this rhythm. Bright overhead LEDs at 9:00 PM signal to the brain that it is midday, suppressing melatonin production and disrupting the body's natural wind-down process.
With a Lutron Smart Lighting Control system this transition happens automatically on a schedule, without any manual adjustment.
Lutron Smart Lighting Control systems support Dim‐to‐Warm lighting fixtures — as the lights dim, their color temperature shifts from a crisp white toward a glowing amber, closely mimicking the behavior of natural light at sunset.
We call this the Sunset Protocol and here is how Lutron makes it effortless:
Scheduled Scenes:
Program an "Evening" scene that automatically dims and warms your lighting at a set time each night, reducing blue light exposure without any thought or effort.
Morning Wake Light:
Gradually brighten and cool your lighting in the morning to support a natural wake‐up, energizing the body in alignment with daylight cues rather than jarring overhead light.
Single‐Tap Control:
One keypad button transitions the entire home from bright task lighting to a warm, low‐level ambient setting — ideal for winding down after dinner.
Away & Return Scenes:
Automate lighting to reflect your daily rhythms — so the home always feels right when you walk in, no matter the time of day.
Bedroom Precision:
Program bedroom lighting to reach its lowest, warmest level as part of a "Sleep" scene, easing the transition to rest far more effectively than a standard dimmer ever could.
Non-Invasive System
Swapping in new dimmers and adding a processor without the hassle of opening up walls. Lutron systems work with most existing fixtures too.
These scenes are programmed during commissioning and refined during the homeowner walkthrough. Your lighting becomes a system that actively supports how you live, not just one that illuminates a room.
Will this work with my existing lights?
It depends on the fixture. A standard dimmer can control brightness, but shifting color temperature, the core of the Sunset Protocol, needs tunable, "Dim to Warm" fixtures like Lutron Rania or Ketra. We'll help you figure out which fixtures can stay and which need to be swapped to get the full effect.

I have used New Age for over 25 years. They deliver consistently superior service. My most recent job presented a very complicated and challenging situation. The electrician, Rudy, copiously studied the problem, conducted extensive troubleshooting to identify the issue, and ultimately came up with the solution. I was 100% satisfied with his work and dedication to solving the problem. A real professional, just like my previous experience with New Age Lighting. I have only used New Age for my electrical needs, and will continue to do so.
